Lopez's career began on August 21, 2004, wrestling as Gixx in the Iowa independent scene before adopting the name Tyler Black. He joined Ian Rotten's Independent Wrestling Association Mid-South (IWA), entering the Ted Petty Invitational Tournament where he defeated Sal Thomaselli but lost to Matt Sydal in the quarterfinals on September 23, 2005. His character shifted when news broke of his WWE contract in August; he turned villain, refusing to put the title on the line against Davey Richards on August 28, which he lost by submission. In his final ROH appearance at Glory By Honor IX on September 11, Black lost the championship to Roderick Strong in a no disqualification match with Terry Funk as guest enforcer, ending a 210-day reign with seven successful defenses. Upon signing with WWE in August 2010, Lopez debuted in Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) on September 30 under the name Seth Rollins. He won the FCW Jack Brisco Classic tournament on January 13, 2011, becoming the inaugural FCW Grand Slam Champion.
