During the Attitude Era, Levesque shed his 'Connecticut Blueblood' persona to become a central figure in the rebellious stable D-Generation X. Alongside Shawn Michaels, Chyna, and Rick Rude, he popularized catchphrases like 'Suck It' and the crotch chop while deriding Bret Hart and Canada. His ring name shortened to Triple H during this period, though he remained Hunter Hearst Helmsley in storylines for years. A pivotal moment occurred when he won the 1997 King of the Ring by defeating Mankind in the finals. Later, he feuded with Owen Hart over the European Championship, winning it by 'defeating' Michaels after Michaels laid down for him on the December 22 episode of Raw is War. In mid-1994 within World Championship Wrestling, Levesque adopted the gimmick of Jean-Paul Lévesque, a character that required him to speak with a French accent he could not actually master. He began using his signature finishing maneuver, the Pedigree, during this tenure. On December 27 at Starrcade '94: Triple Threat, he suffered a pinfall loss to Alex Wright. By January 1995, after failing to agree on a new contract, he left WCW. Upon arriving in the WWF later that year, he debuted as Hunter Hearst Helmsley on April 30, 1995, defeating Buck Zumhofe. His first pay-per-view appearance came at SummerSlam on August 27 against Bob Holly. Early success included an undefeated streak until a Survivor Series match loss to The Undertaker. A defining feud emerged in late 1995 with hog farmer Henry O. Godwinn, culminating in the infamous Hog Pen match on December 17 at In Your House 5: Seasons Beatings. After losing his first singles competition match to Bret Hart on March 4, 1996, he adopted Sable as his valet, leading to a conflict with Marc Mero.
